San Jose Dragonboat

Intro

Originating from China over 2,000 years ago, dragon boat is a competitive racing sport involving 20 paddlers in a long canoe, with one caller and one steersperson, working collaboratively to move the boat faster than the surrounding competiton. Dragon boat not only requires strength and endurance, but synchronization and team work. In modern times, it has become the fastest growing international water sport with competitions known as "dragon boat festivals" being held all around the world.

Coming from humble beginnings as a budding social club, we have built San Jose Dragon Boat step by step into a formidable competitor. Starting from our founding in May 2013, we grew from two separate clubs into one unified team representing San Jose State University. Officially established as an SJSU Club Sport in 2023, we've worked together to create a space that embodies both the competitive spirit and the strong sense of community that defines us today.

We're Spartans through and through, embracing a spirit of resilience, teamwork, and determination. Every stroke we take is a testament to our perseverance and our commitment to each other as a team. We thrive on venturing into the unknown—tackling uncharted waters, competing in new races, and growing together as a community. Dragon boat racing is more than a sport; it's an adventure that pushes us past our limits, together.

FAQ

No experience is needed at all! We'll supply all the equipment and teach you everything you need to know about the basics of dragon boat during our Open Practices!

That's Okay! Even though dragonboat is a watersport, being able to swim isn't a requirement. Wearing a Personal Floatation Device (PFD) is required while on the boat which the team provides free of charge!

The team is open to everyone! However, due to limited spots on the boat for each competition, we will host time trials to fill our roster. If you don't make it into a competition, don't worry—keep training and you'll have more chances to qualify for the next race!

We typically have 2-3 races per semester.

We have weekly practices that aren't mandatory but highly encoFuraged and tracked, each practice takes around 2 hours excluding travel time. In addition, we track workout sessions, either by yourself or with the team, tracked using Strava. Mandatory practices are expected during race prep about 2 weeks preceding each race.
